From Apprentice to Expert

A Flooring Craftsman’s Journey With Sievert

In the world of indoor flooring, mastery is shaped not just by years on the job, but by the tools and passion that drive every project. Meet one craftsman whose story reflects both. Beginning with humble origins in the backyard and growing into a career marked by hard-earned skill and trust in Sievert’s heating tools.

Building a Career From the Ground Up

Meet Nick Hughes

After finishing school in 2005, this tradesman set his sights on construction, a field that called to him since childhood. With a knack for building, he encountered early hurdles finding an apprenticeship, but managed to land a role in flooring. Four years of hands-on learning and three years of TAFE studies later, even graduating first in his state. He began building a solid name in the industry.

Discovering Sievert, A Turning Point for Nick

The commercial side of building, especially working with sheet vinyl, introduced him to Sievert. Spotting colleagues using Sievert Promatic gas burners was his cue to jump in. “I’ve been using Sievert products for the past 16 years now and will continue to use them for the rest of my career,” he says, crediting the tools for their lasting reliability.

Driven By Creativity and Family

Providing for my family motivates me daily, but I also have a creative mind. Flooring gives me an outlet to create something new every single day

There’s a special satisfaction in tackling patterned jobs and intricate designs. The kind of projects that make him feel proud. He’s driven to one day open his own shop, shaping his future just as carefully as he shapes every floor.

Inside the Craft

Real Projects and Challenges

No two workdays look the same. He handles everything from multi-day jobs to major hospital contracts lasting months. Commercial vinyl remains a favorite, especially when preparation sets the stage for a smooth install.

If the prep work is done right, the rest of the job runs smoothly. It’s definitely a physically hard job not for the weak.

he explains.

Promatic and Powerjet

Big jobs call for the power and reliability of the Sievert Promatic torch, especially when it’s time to work large vinyl surfaces or simply heat up a cold room. For smaller tasks, the compact Powerjet offers unmatched portability and convenience. “It’s much easier to carry around than a full gas bottle,” he notes.

The Art of Shaping With a Soft Flame

Shaping vinyl with heat demands skill, experience, and intuition. “You really only get one chance. Not enough heat, and the fit isn’t right; too much, and you burn the product,” he says. Years of practice have honed his technique, making the process as much art as science. Soft flame shaping is essential in moulding walls and corners — one of the trade’s defining skills.

Precision, Technique, and Trust

Flooring materials respond to heat differently, making each project a new challenge. Knowing his Sievert torches so well, he adjusts the flame instantly as needed.

It’s become second nature. I know when and how much heat to apply for the perfect result

Putting Safety First

Safety isn’t optional, it’s built into every Sievert torch he uses. He appreciates features like high-quality regulators, stable flame control, and anti-flare designs that minimize risks and ensure steady operation. Ergonomic handles help with comfort and grip, especially on long days.

The reliable safety features allow me to focus on the task, making my daily work safer and more efficient
